Lamorde reiterates commitment to cleaning EFCC

Published by Punch on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, on Monday reiterated his commitment to making the agency effective.Lamorde spoke at a media training on economic crimes tagged, The EFCC and the Rule of Law, held in Lagos. The EFCC boss, who was represented by the Head of Operations, EFCC Lagos office, Zuberu Muazu, said his desire to rid the agency of corrupt influence was born out of the need to increase the tempo of the fight against economic crimes. He said, This is also in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan which emphasises the fight against corruption as a national policy. There is no gainsaying the fact that corruption remains our countrys greatest problem and we need the support of the media to reinvigorate the fight against economic crimes, including corruption. He added that the EFCC believed that the gaps had resulted from the inability of some Nigerian to understand the commissions mandate and the complex nature of economic and financial crimes.Meanwhile, the commission asked a Lagos High Court in Ikeja to dismiss the prayer of former Managing Director of Bank PHB Plc (now Keystone Bank Ltd) Francis Atuche, seeking to file additional evidence in support of his preliminary objection to the charges instituted against him by the commission. The EFCCs grounds of objection to the prayer was that argument had already closed on the accused persons preliminary objection, seeking for the quashing of the charge. The additional evidence Atuche was seeking the courts permission to tender was the information documents containing the charge EFCC had instituted against him at the Federal High Court, Lagos. Also in Abuja, the commission asked the German Government to relocate its regional Police Liaison Headquarters in Accra, Ghana to Nigeria.Lamorde, made the demand when the new German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke, paid him a courtesy call.He also stated that the commission had helped the Government of Germany to repatriate more than eight cars and over $2m stolen from Germany by Nigerian fraudsters. He also stated that the commission had repatriated more than eight cars stolen from Germany by Nigerian fraudsters to Germany. The EFCC added that over $2m had also been recovered from scammers and returned to German nationals who were victims of various scams.
