ICPC arrests Ogun lawmaker

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission on Monday arrested a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr. Abiodun Akovoyan, over his alleged failure to execute constituency projects.Akovoyan, representing Ipokia/Idiroko state constituency, is a Peoples Democratic Party member and Chairman, Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly.It was learnt that the lawmaker was arrested in Abeokuta, the state capital, by ICPC officials who had been trailing him.The anti-graft agency was said to have acted on petitions by some members of the lawmakers constituency, who accused him of embezzling about N15m collected for constituency projects.A top official, who craved anonymity, said Akovoyan was first taken into police custody in Abeokuta before being whisked away to the ICPC office in Lagos State for further interrogation.The source said, He was arrested for failed constituency projects during his first term in office. The commission acted on petitions written by some concerned members of his constituency from Ipokia.I cannot disclose the petitioners. The lawmaker was arrested today at his house in Abeokuta. When the commission officials got to his office, he was not there. He was later picked up in his house at about 2.00 p.m.It was also learnt that Akovoyans arrest followed his failure to honour invitation by the ICPC over the failed constituency projects.
