Don highlights danger of procuring abortion

Published by Tribune on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

A medical practitioner in the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin, Dr. Mary Ogechi Esere, has raised the alarm on the dangers of procuring abortion, saying there has been a severe increase in birth complications as well as emotional and family problems.Presenting a paper, entitled: 'Abortion and Sexually Transmitted Diseases', at a seminar organised on girl-child education by the Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs in Ilorin, Dr. Esere said 'whether we like it or not, abortion affects us all.'The medical practitioner, who said people should have a positive look on human life, avoid pre-marital sex and make a decision not to abort any child that God gives, added that the measures above would help the people to avoid the terrible plague of abortion and sexually transmitted diseases.Dr Esere, who said that abortion has a great effect of leaving its mark in the society with great depth, added that the most frightening consequence was the reality of post abortion syndrome, 'due to the fact that this disorder lurks in the subconscious of the women who had the abortions and seems to wait for a moment of emotional weakness to overwhelm them with feelings of guilt and loss.'Also speaking, the wife of Kwara state governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, said the gathering was meant to sensitise the students, parents and the general public on the evils of abortion. She recalled that the menace was taking the lives and truncating the careers of many young school children, adding that there were cases of pre-mature death in the society which she said could affect socio-economic growth.Mrs. Ahmed said that young people were still practising pre-marital sex despite the several campaigns against HIV/AIDS, adding that young girls that had their womb damaged resulting in the inability to procreate for the rest of their lives. She, therefore, urged all parents to bring up their children in the fear of God, adding that both Bible and Quran condemned abortion and that it was through the fear of God that children could be free from evils.
