Hockey: Heartlands rule Africa again

Defending champions Heartlands Queens of Nigeria on Saturday retained their Africa Hockey Cup for Club Champions in Lusaka, Zambia. Heartlands walloped Sunrise of Zimbabwe 5-1 in a one-sided final to end the competition unbeaten. The Nigerian women hockey team won all their matches scoring 43 goals and conceding only two.With the victory, Heartlands proved that their win in Ghana last year was not a fluke as they continued their dominance of African women club hockey.In the mens event, Niger Flickers, one of Nigerias representatives, failed to grab the bronze medal in the third place match against Police of Kenya losing 3-1 to the East Africans.Indomitable Sharkia Hockey Club of Egypt however claimed a record 20th Africa Cup for Club Champions title with a 4-2 win over Strathmore University of Kenya.The explosive match saw Sharkia race into an early 2-0 lead through goals from Samir Mohammed and Waled Mahmoud but Strathmore pulled a goal back as the first period ended 2-1 in favour of the Egyptians.
