Robbers kill 10 in Kogi bank raids

About 20 suspected armed robbers on Tuesday stormed three banks in Okene, Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State at about 3pm. The robbers, who carted away undisclosed sums of money, allegedly killed 10 people after robbing the United Bank for Africa, Intercontinetal Bank, a subsidiary of Access Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank.The robberies were said to have lasted about one hour. Our correspondent learnt that some police stations in the town were hurriedly closed as a result of the robbery attacks. A source informed our correspondent that the robbers, numbering over 20, stormed the banks with AK 47 rifles and other dangerous weapons.The robbers, who came in with exotic cars including Toyota JP, Mecedez Benz, and Honda Accord, were said to have operated without being challenged by security agents.Many travelers, coming from the south and heading to the north, hurriedly were reported to have turned back to avoid falling preys to the robbers.The source said many shops and other banks in the town quickly closed for the day. Our correspondent also learnt that parents later stormed schools to pick their children home.Meanwhile, the Police Public Relation Officer of Kogi State Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasomi, confirmed the robbery incident to journalists. He said they found it difficult to contact their men in Okene due to communication break-down.He also said he could not confirm if lives were lost during the robberies.On Monday, some suspected armed robbers had bombed a bank and police station in Ayetoro-Gbede and carted away weapons from the Police station.
