Gunmen kill five, injure four in Kaduna

Published by Punch on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

Marauders resumed their nocturnal raids on Southern Kaduna villages in the early hours of Tuesday, killing five residents of Angwan Rami village in Kaura Local Government Area of the state. Four other persons were also seriously injured during the attack on Angwan Rami. The killings came hours after an illegal bomb-making factory and armoury in Kaduna, allegedly belonging to Boko Haram, exploded, injuring three suspected members of the group who were apprehended by the residents and handed over to the police.Ethnic and sectarian violence has gripped the Southern Senatorial Zone since the April post-presidential election violence in the state. Our correspondent learnt that unknown gunmen stormed Angwan-Rami in the early hours of Tuesday and shot indiscriminately. By the end of the raid five villagers were killed. The dead included five elderly persons. A six-year-old child also received machete wounds during the raid. The reason for the attack could however not be ascertained. No arrest has been made as at the time of filing this report. The Chairman of Kaura Local Government, Mrs. Florence Aya, said, "The vigilance group in the village had assembled to start patrolling the village on Monday. Suddenly, some attackers, who were lying in a bush nearby unnoticed, opened fire on them. They could do nothing about it, since they were not carrying firearms. While they tried to ward off the attackers, the invaders went to those they shot and inflicted deadly machete cuts on them, killing the five that were shot and could not run."They also cornered a woman carrying an infant and cut them leaving them for dead. You need to see the kind of injuries on this woman and her infant. But by some miracle, the baby and the mother survived."Two others, who were shot, were also critically wounded. They are also receiving treatment."But, even as they came with guns, some of the vigilance group members were able to injure one. One escaped leaving a trail of blood on his escape route. As I speak with you, the youth and the police are searching the bushes for him. This is very, very sad. We need more security here". The Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Lawan confirmed the incident, saying there was an attack resulting in the killing of five persons in the village.Lawan, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, added that the police had started investigations into the midnight raid.Meanwhile, Mondays bomb blast in Angwar Magaji in the outskirts of Kaduna claimed the life of a toddler.Two-year-old Lois Obajemu strapped to the back of her mother at the time of the explosion, was hit by a shrapnel from the blast.Narrating how his baby was killed in the explosion, Mr. Festus Obajemu, who comes from Kogi State, said amid tears how little Lois was hit by a flying object as his wife attempted to escape with the baby when the incident first occurred.
