Published by Tribune on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

Ondo State government has completed the Isinkan Caring Heart Neigbourhood Market in Akure, the state capital, with the construction of the phase II of the N235 million market built through direct labour.Inaugurating the market, the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, said the amount expended on it included the cost of building 492 open and lock-up shops, reclamation of two hectares of land, building of asphalt-laid access road, police post, clinics, crche, fire station and blocks of toilets among others.Mimiko, who said his administration adopted the construction of modern markets as a pivot for inner city renewal, also explained that 20 of such had so far been built in different parts of the state. He described the construction of the market within six months and the deep channelisation, road network and the solar-powered electricity among other facilities provided with N235 million, as a clear demonstration of his government's respect for public funds. He said, 'This is a classical example of value for money, respect for public funds and speedy delivery of projects that would have direct impact on the majority of the populace. We have fully maximised the use of public funds by our approach and the state is better for it.'We are actually using the construction of modern markets with all the facilities as a pivot for our inner city renewal programme. What we have now is a truly befitting landscape that is translating our town to beautiful cities,' he added. The governor urged the traders to ensure effective utilisation of the facilities provided in the market and endeavour to pay up the loans they obtained from the government so that their other colleagues could also benefit from the gesture. The governor assured residents of the state that the Oba Adesida and Oyemekun roads rehabilitation would be completed and put into effective use within the next two weeks.Responding to the gesture of the state government, the traders, who spoke through their chairman, Mr Ayodele Adewale, commended the state government for the kind gesture and described the transformation of the former slum into a beautiful paradise as a dream come through. They recalled their past ugly experiences of how they used to share shops built in the slum with madmen and domestic animals that will litter their surroundings with faeces.
