Warri South spends N20m on empowerment

Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has put smiles on faces of 190 women in the council area, as it gave them N20 million under its first ever micro-credit scheme.Each of the women went home with N100,000 cheque amidst praises on the chairman of the local government, Mr Mathew Mofe Edema, who said the gesture was to key into Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan's three-point agenda.He urged the beneficiaries to repay the loans to enable other women in the council area also to have assess to the fund.Mr Edema disclosed that another 190 women from the 19 wards that made up the local government would be given loans in January, while the scheme would be suspended in February and to resume in March and runs till June 2012.He said the loans would enable the beneficiaries to boost their trades which would eventually offer them the opportunity of employing more hands into their businesses.Executive Assistant to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Micro-credit Programme, Dr Anthonia Ashiedu, commended the chairman of the local government for deeming it fit to empower women in his council.She noted that the loans would go a long way in improving the businesses of the women, which, in turn, would enhance their economic power.Dr Ashiedu urged the women to utilise the loans judiciously and refund the money on time so that they could have access to more loan opportunities.
