Ubulu-Uku youths hold cultural fiesta to unite villages

Published by Guardian on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

AS Ubulu-Uku people of Delta State prepare for the Yuletide, the burden of uniting the town that is at the edge of disintegration due to power tussle, weighs heavily on the youths.Aware that culture could be exploited to restore peace and harmony, Ubulu-Uku Youth Association nationwide embarked on a peace mission, using cultural activities as plank.Between December 27, 2011 and January 1, 2012, the town will come together as various villages will engage one another in competitive events. Activities kick off on December 27 with a non-denomination service at Ubulu Primary School premises.Tagged Night of Praise, the town's monarch, Obi Akaeze Ofulue III, who also doubles as a Deeper Life Pastor, would be ministering alongside other religious leaders.Other events including masquerade fiesta, traditional wrestling competition, football matches, beauty pageant, traditional dances and other activities that would showcase the rich cultural heritage of the people, will hold at Abuedo Primary School compound. Also to hold is a cultural fashion show that is aimed at displaying the people's indigenous fabrics, jewelries as well as ceremonial regalia. The coordinator, Ubulu-Uku Youth Association, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, Mr. Clifford Bob Ofunne, said the essence of the programme was to restore peace and unity in a town that was respected by its neighbours for peaceful co-existence.His words: 'In the recent times, the town was in the news over power tussle between the royal family and some chiefs and we felt the development was not good for the image of the town that was remarkable for peaceful coexistence.'As a people of rich cultural heritage, we are saying that in as much as we cannot change tradition, we will use our culture, which is dynamic, to bring our people together this festive season'.He said some of the competitive events would involve the association's chapters from the 36 states of the federation and FCT.The people's political representatives at both state and federal levels including Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu as well as Hon. Amechi Marakpor are expected to grace the event.'We want to use the occasion to bring them closer to the youths that voted them into power', Ofunne said.
