S'West CNPP faults parties' deregistration, allocation to security

Published by Guardian on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

THE South-West chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) de-registration of some political parties is unjustifiable. It said since the electoral body was no longer funding the parties, it ought not to deregister them.In a statement issued at the end of its meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, the CNPP also rejected the planned removal of oil subsidy by the Federal Government. The group argued that the action could only aggravate the suffering of the ordinary Nigerians and, therefore, appealed to the people to resist the policy. The statementwas jointly signed by the Zonal CNPP chairman, Alhaji Yinka Olona and secretary general, Gboyega Adeniji. The group also criticised the provision for security in the 2012 budget and asked the National Assembly to reject the allocation, which it described as outrageous, adding that priority should be given to food security and job creation. The CNPP also faulted the budget presented by President Goodluck Jonathan as it affects the cancellation of wavers and concessions for the importation of rice and flour, which it described as the stable foods of most Nigerians.Olona, however, commended Governor Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State for appointing CNPP members into his cabinet and implored other South-West governors to emulate him.
