CAN alleges plot by Boko Haram to bomb churches in S'East, others

Published by Guardian on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

Gunmen kill five in KadunaTHERE seems to be no end yet to the Boko Haram sect threats in the country as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised alarm over an alleged plan by the sect to bomb some churches in the Southeast, South-South and Southwest geo-political zones during the Yuletide and new year celebrations. This was disclosed at a press conference in Enugu on Monday by the Enugu State's CAN, Chairman and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Nigeria, Rev. Paul Emeka.Meanwhile, less than 24 hours after the bomb explosion that rocked Kaduna metropolis on Monday, which injured three persons, again, unknown gunmen yesterday killed five persons in the state. The unknown gunmen, who struck yesterday night, invaded Angwan-rami village in Kaura council of the state, near Kagoro town shooting at a vigilance group.Emeka said that members of the religious sect had already named some churches they were going to bomb, adding that the bottom line is that they are targeting large churches, where they intend to kill people in their large number. The Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Lawan, while confirming the incident, said that there was actually an attack resulting in the killing of five persons in the village, adding that investigations had started into the midnight raid.Although the motive for the attackers could not be ascertained, it was alleged that five persons including a boy of about six years were killed during the attack. But, no arrest has been made as at the time of filing this report. The latest incident is coming on the heels of a similar attack on Kukum Daji, near Kagoro, two weeks ago, which left oneperson dead and two injured in the same Kaura council. Also speaking on the attack, the Chairman of Kaura Local Council Area, Mrs. Florence Aya, in an interview said, 'the vigilance group in the village had assembled to start patrolling the village around 9.30 p.m. on Monday when suddenly some attackers, whohad laid ambush, opened fire on them. They could do nothing about it, since they were not armed.'She added, 'while they tried to wade off the attackers, the invaders went to those they shot and inflicted deadly machete cuts on them, killing the five that were shot. They also cornered a woman carrying an infant and cut them leaving them dead.'Meanwhile, the Media Aide to Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Mr. Reuben Buhari, who reacted to the attack, debunked insinuations of an imposition of curfew in the area.
