Retrenchment: Unions threaten showdown with NNPC

The two labour unions operating at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have threatened to shut down the operations of the corporation if the management goes ahead with its plan to lay off workers.In a joint statement by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers on Wednesday, the workers said they were not consulted on the planned retrenchment of staff and adjustment of allowances.Other issues raised by the unions included the planned stoppage of the phased payment of the January allowance and the delay in the appraisal and promotion of staff.The unions warned the management of the corporation to reverse its decisions on the key issues that affected the welfare of the staff or face a serious action that would paralyse the economy.The statement signed by the corporations PENGASSAN Chairman, Mr. F. O. Johnson, and NUPENG Chairman, Mr. O. B. Udofia, said the unions uncovered plans by the NNPC management to embark on a massive retrenchment of young and energetic workers, leaving out some old hands who were not adding value to the system.Johnson and Udofia said the choice was up to the management to treat the issue with the urgency and action it deserved for peace to reign.
