Glo-CAF Awards: Keita, Ayew, Yaya Toure vie for Africa's best title

Published by Tribune on Thu, 22 Dec 2011

AFRICA will crown a new footballer as its best tonight in Accra as Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure, Mali's Seydou Keita and Andre Dede Ayew of Ghana vie for the prestigious player's title in the Glo-CAF Awards night in State House, Accra, Ghana.Unlike previous editions where nominees featured previous winners, none of those in contention has won the title before. The final list released yesterday denied Cameroun's Samuel Eto'o Fils a place in the history books.Eto'o could have been in contention for a glorious fifth title but was dropped yesterday along with Senegal's Mousa Sow to leave the stage for the top three.Eto'o currently has issues with the Disciplinary Committee of his country's football body, FECAFOOT which last Monday landed a 15-match ban on him.Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure is tipped as top favourite for the title for the leading role he plays in the elevation of Manchester City as English football title contender. As a matter of fact, he scored City's winning goal in a 1-0 FA Cup victory over Stoke City last May ending the Eastland side's trophyless season in 35 years.Keita, whose highest individual honour is the Best Player Award of Nigeria '99 FIFA World Youth Championship, is also a champion with FC Barcelona as UEFA Champions League, Spanish League UEFA Super Cup and of recent World Club titles in the kitty. Then home boy, Ayew, will hope Accra will be a Theatre of Dream for him, as he basks in the euphoria of a newly-installed BBC African Footballer Of The Year.
