Ebonyi House removes Speaker

The Speaker, EbonyiHouse ofAssembly, Mr Ikechukwu Nwankwo, was on Wednesday in Abakaliki, removed from office for alleged fraudulent activities, incompetence and abuse of office.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that 20 out of the 24 members of the assembly voted in support of the removal of the former speaker.The lawmakers immediately elected Mr Chukwuma Nwazunku, representing Ebonyi North East constituency, as the new speaker.The motion for the speaker's removal was moved by Mr Obasi Odefa, representing Onicha East constituency and seconded by Mr Kingsley Ikoro, the Chief Whip and member representing Afikpo North East constituency.Nwankwo thus became the first speaker to be removed from office and the one with the shortest tenure as he was sworn in on June 7, 2011.Odefa said that Nwankwo's leadership style was detrimental to the progress of the assembly and the members were no longer comfortable with it.
