Fayemi calls for unity among Isan-Ekiti indigenes

Published by Tribune on Thu, 22 Dec 2011

Isan-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State was agog at the weekend as the people of the community celebrated their day, with Governor Kayode Fayemi charging the people of the community to eschew political differences and embrace reconciliation for the development of the community.Governor Fayemi, who gave the charge, appealed to his kinsmen in Isan to reconcile and sink their political acrimony for meaningful development of the community.Fayemi, who was speaking at the 19th Isan-Ekiti Unity Day and the launch of N200 million ultra-modern palace fund, also reiterated the state government's determination to create means of hastening development in the state, saying one of the measures was the harnessing of the mineral resources of the various communities.According to him, it was now imperative for all the indigenes of the Isan community to bury their political differences and forget the injuries of the past to fast-track development of the community.Fayemi said: 'I want to use this opportunity of Isan Unity Day to emphasise the importance of reconciliation in all its dimensions across the spectra of our community. Let us forgive one another of both real and perceived offences and injuries of the past.'It is only when we move beyond mutually destructive bitterness and toil together in unity that we can advance to catapult our community to the forefront of development and progress.'The governor said Isan-Ekiti was renowned for its large deposit of 'high quality kaolin,' which he said was an essential input in the paint, cosmetics, chalk, agro allied and pharmaceutical industries and would soon be exploited commercially. Governor Fayemi pointed out that exploitation of the natural resources would give fillip to the growth of industries and the creation of job for the generality of Ekiti people and also 'trigger the expansion of the economy chain.'Earlier in an address, President of Isan Progressive Union, Mr. Sunday Babalola Ajulo, called on the state government to reconstruct and rehabilitate the community following the effects of the 2007 election.Traditional ruler of the community, Oba Sunday Ajiboye, the Onisan of Isan, urged the Ekiti State government to take advantage of the agrarian nature of the community and build sustainable agriculture in the state.Oba Ajiboye said he would donate land to intending investors to establish their industries in the area.About N50 million was realised at the fund raising with the governors of Oyo, Osun and Ogun states donating N1 million each to the fund-raising.
