WAIFEM to collaborate with ACBF on capacity building

AS part of its efforts topromote research and e-learning in the sub-region,the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM)has signed a four-year grant agreement with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), to increase the scope of capacity building in the West African sub-region.The agreementwould address gender issues, such as female participation in capacity building programmes on financial management, study of macro-economic models relevant for economic stability, policy issues on global economic crisis and the emerging crises in Europe in terms of its implications for the development of the West African sub-region.Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Dr. Frannie Leautier accompanied by the Manager, West and Central Africa Region, Dr. Coffi Remy Noumon, and other top officials of the foundation, maintained that financial crisis was a major global problem in the region.According to Leautier, WAIFEM has often designed specific programmes to address the crisis and had also proffered solutions for financial management within the region.She explained that the organisation also deals with emerging issues in global economy and it impact on the West African sub-regionHer words: 'the sub-region has the aspiration to excel in financial management, to eradicate poverty and address the problem of unemployment especially among the youths. The partnership with WAIFEM would be mutually beneficial, to contribute greatly to financial management. ACBF has just launched its Medium Term plan for 2012 to 2016, to build and promote economic development within the region.'On ACBF's support for various programmes in Nigeria since the 1990s, she said: 'The national centre for economic management in Nigeria has received support from the foundation in terms of trade negotiation, statistics management and other developmental projects'.Leautieralso expressed the foundation's desire to support Nigeria in programmes targeted at youth employment and good governance, which would have positive impact on economic growth and development within the sub-region.Director General of WAIFEM, Prof. Akpan Ekpo, said, 'ACBF hascollaborated with WAIFEM for many years in various ways, to enhance capacity building within the sub-region. The grant would enable the organisation to widen its scope in capacity building, especially in the area of women participation in training programmes, research and e-learning.
