Man arraigned for cutting off neighbour's thumb

A 29-year-old man, David Akindele, on Thursday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly cutting off his neighbours finger with a machete.Akindele was alleged to have cut off Chinoso Ogbaudus right thumb on December 5, at about 7am with a machete when they had a misunderstanding.The charge sheet reads in part, That you David Akindele on December 5, committed felony within the Lagos magisterial district by unlawfully cutting off the right thumb of Chinoso Ogbaudu with a machete thus causing him grievous harm.The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 335 of the Criminal Code Cap C-17, Vol. II Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.Akindele, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.Magistrate Adebayo Sonuga granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.Sonugasaid one of the two sureties must be a Lagos State civil servant not below level 15 who must present a covering letter from the permanent secretary of his/her ministry.He added that the second surety must be a manager of a reputable bank who must own a house on Victoria Island, Lagos.The sureties are also expected to furnish the court with verifiable residential and office addresses.The case has been adjourned till January 17 for mention.Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man, Ali Mohammed, was also arraigned at the same court on Thursday for alleged manslaughter through dangerous driving.Mohammed was accused of driving a Toyota Saloon with number plate MJ 903 AAA in a reckless manner on December 18 at about 7:30am on Durosinmi Etti Road, Lekki, Lagos, and allegedly killed a pedestrian, Babatunde Ilori.Besides, Mohammed was accused of hitting Ogochukwu Francis, who was riding a Jincheng motorcycle with number plate QP 252 MUS, belonging to Sovereign Guard Company, causing him bodily injuries.Mohammed pleaded not guilty to all the charges.Magistrate A. A. Adefulire however admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.He added that the sureties should furnish the court with verifiable official and residential addresses.The case has been adjourned till January 19 for further hearing.
