Carnival to unite Uyo indigenes 'LG boss

The Transition Chairman, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ekerette Ekpenyong, has said the cardinal objective of his administration is to unite the people of Uyo through their social and cultural heritage.Ekpenyong, who spoke with our correspondent in Uyo on Thursday, attributed the problem of Uyo to political factions, which fuelled acrimony among various interest groups in the city.He stated that the only quick and easy way to achieve unity among the people was to use their culture, adding that this was what the Uyo Christmas Carnival was meant to achieve.He said 105 villages, which made up Uyo, would project their cultural heritage on the three-day festival beginning from December 27-29. He said one major highlight of the carnival would be when the indigenes eat from the same pot.Ekpenyong said the carnival would be different from those celebrated in other parts of the country, adding that it would be based on the peoples cultural heritage.He said, Uyo Christmas Carnival has as its objective the fostering of peace, harmony and unity among Uyo people. Politics has engendered enmity among Uyo people.When I came in, I decided to introduce a programme aimed at projecting peaceful coexistence among the various indigenes.Ekpenyong said former Local Government areas such as Uruan, Nsit Atai and Ibesikpo; as well as other local governments in the state would also take part in the carnival to showcase their diverge cultural heritage.He said his administration would sponsor 10 indigenes to school overseas, while 30 others would be awarded scholarships to study in universities of their choice across the country.
