Ogun inaugurates joint task force to tackle robbers

Published by Punch on Fri, 23 Dec 2011

Ogun State Government has inaugurated its Security Trust Fund and the Joint Military/Police Task Force in order to assure investors of a secure business environment in the state.Speaking in Abeokuta, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, described security as paramount and pre-eminent in governance. He said, The primary purpose of government is the security of lives and property of the citizenry. He added that his administration was determined to make the state uncomfortable for robbers so that people could sleep with their two eyes closed. The governor explained that security was technology-driven, noting that his administration was in touch with appropriate institutions to establish a modern security network to cover the entire state. He said the state government had ordered 10 Armoured Personnel Carriers to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Joint Task Force. He added, We are not oblivious of the fact that the maintenance of law and order does not come cheap. The Security Trust Fund, according to the governor, will support the governments efforts in tackling security challenges through sourcing for resources and efficiently deploying such to achieve the objective of a safe and secure environment. He added that the state government had set up the Quick Respond Squad to complement the Joint Military/Police Task Force.Meanwhile, former Director-General, State Security Service, Col. Kayode Are (retd), on Thursday said the rising crime wave in state could only be curtailed if individuals and communities collaborated effectively with government and security agencies. Are, also a former Acting National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, argued that relevant agencies would have to develop proactive strategies rather than fire-fighting approach towards combating crime.
