APGA flays Lagos over Lekki tolling

Published by Punch on Fri, 23 Dec 2011

All Progressive Grand Alliance has disagreed with the Lagos State Government and the Action Congress of Nigeria-led government in Lagos State over the tolling on the Lekki-Epe Expressway by the Lekki Concession Company. In a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Sanjo Olawuyi, APGA described the governments action as unfriendly, saying the ACN had deviated from the progressive ideals that it claimed to possess.APGA said it was disturbed by the fact that the state government went ahead to implement the tolling despite public apathy to the project. The party said the action showed that the ACN administration in the state is neither public spirited nor masses sensitive. The statement said, It was sad to hear that some of the protesting residents of Lekki area were molested by security operatives, while making their grievances known to the appropriate quarters. This is uncalled for. It is not democratic because democracy involves freedom of speech, expression and association. The party called on Governor Babatunde Fashola to have a change of mind on the issue. On the hike in school fees at the Lagos State University, APGA said the increment was a calculated attempt to send out all the poor students from LASU.This is a far cry from the democratic dividend expected from the ACN of Lagos State. This is the same government that hyped free education as its main selling point during the April 2011 general elections. Who is fooling who' If we can remember, the UPN regime of Alhaji Lateef Jakande that established LASU did not establish it to be an institution that will be commercialised.
