Health workers' strike grounds medical services nationwide

Medical services were onThursday, grounded in the various Federal Government- owned health institutions across the country as health workers embarked on a three-day warning strike over non-implementation of agreements reached with the government.The health workers, under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), declared the three-day warning strike to make the Federal Government assent to their demands.The health workers' unions currently on strike are the Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN); Non-Academic Staff Union of Teaching Hospitals; Senior Staff Association of Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions and the Nigerian Union of Pharmacists, Medical Scientists and Professionals Allied to Medicine.Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, the chairman of the Senior Staff Association, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Mr Olagoke Issac, said the warning strike became imperative following the failure of the Federal Government to meet the demands of the unions.He further said that the last ultimatum given the Federal Government over the demands expired in October 2011, adding that with the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, a technical committee was set up.He, however said that since the committee came up with its recommendations, nothing had been done.
