Lawmaker provides free eye treatment for 1,500

Senator Basheer Mohammed (PDP-Kano) has provided free treatment for cataract, an eye disease, to 1,500 patients in 15 local government areas of Kano Central senatorial district.A press statement signed by the coordinator of his campaign office in Kano, Ibrahim Mohammed said this was part of efforts to cater to the underprivileged members of his constituency.It stated that 100 patients were treated per local government under the programme, which began on November 21, as part of his constituency project.According to the statement, the team of doctors who treated the patients also gave out drugs and eye-glasses to those who needed them.It was learnt that cataract was a clouding of the lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light.Early in the development of age-related cataract, the power of the lens may be increased, causing short-sightedness (myopia).Cataracts typically progress slowly to cause vision loss and are potentially blinding if untreated. The condition usually affects both eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the other.
