House of Reps Committee decries neglect of national planning

Nigerian socio-economic woes have been attributed to the abandonment of the age-long national planning system which usually was a road map to development.With such lapse, programmes in the development of budgets, continuity which minimised waste and promoted even development had always been hindered.Making the statement during the week was the chairman of the visiting Committee of the House of Representatives Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Honourable Bethel Amadi, during an interactive section with the staff members of Nigerian Institute For Economic Research (NISER) as part of the activities marking the familiarisation tour of the committee to the institute.The chairman, who said that the five-man delegate was in NISER to familiarise with the activities of the institute with a view to forming a working relationship, explained that the country can hasten its socio-economic development if the institute was supported in its research programmes and the outcome of such researches was adequately utilised.He lamented the deliberate avoidance of ensuring that the Federal Government planned ahead and while making allusion to the development plans which he said had made India's economy workable, he stated that the law that would ensure that every successive government sticks to development plan was underway.Earlier, the Director General of NISER, Professor Olufemi Taiwo, had requested the support of the committee to enable the institute deal with its challenges.
