Ilupeju-Ekiti decries crime wave, calls for more police presence

The people of Ilupeju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have raised the alarm over what they described as the rising wave of crimes in the community in recent times.This is following the alleged murder of an elderly woman identified as Mrs. Ajireru (Iya Ojo) by yet to be identified people in the early hours of Monday, December 19.Sources in the community claimed that the murder of the woman, said to be about 100 years old, was with finesse, alleging that it was difficult to detect.The source also disclosed that a few meters from the scene of the murder, two motorcycle accidents claimed the life of one Pa Zaccheus of Apataje Street in the community, thereby heightening the call by the people for a divisional police station in the town.The source claimed that people of questionable character gathered at Ire Junction in the town at various odd hours without any tangible thing they were doing, aveering the need for more security presence in the community now.The source said the alleged suspected murder should be investigated and what it described as 'the rising spate of crime waves in Ilipeju-Ekiti.'It said 'the investigation of these crimes and the increased security in the community will forestall the reoccurrence of crime.'Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, said there was no foul play suspected by the police in the death, describing it as 'sudden and natural death.'According to the Ekiti Police spokesperson, the incident was even brought to the notice of the police by the traditional ruler of the community.Jimoh urged the people to be security conscious during Christmas season and report any suspicious move to the police division in the area.
