Published by Tribune on Fri, 23 Dec 2011

More than 3,000 trainees have graduated from the Agege Local Government Vocational Centre since inception in 2002, the council boss, Mr Ayodeji Jubreel, has said.Jubreel spoke at the graduation ceremony of 100 trainees from the centre, established by the local council in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).The last batch of trainees completed a four-month intensive programme in hair dressing, fashion designing, cosmetology and computer studies.Jubreel said that the centre had helped the council's push for the economic empowerment of its residents in line with its responsibilities.'The purpose of establishing a vocational centre in this local government area is to provide training that would equip the youth and the unemployed adults with practical skills that can make them become self-reliant.'Many of them are making use of their acquired knowledge for the benefit of the nation, their communities and personal lives,' he said.Jubreel urged parents to encourage their children to utilise the opportunity of the free vocational training offered at the centre. Some of the trainees who spoke with newsmen said that the training had equipped them with entrepreneurial abilities.Mustapha Taiwo (22), who studied computer studies, said he was grateful for the opportunity given to him.He said he would love to establish a computer business centre where he could utilise his acquired skills and earn a living.'I am happy to be part of this training programme. I hope to start a computer business centre but I do not have enough capital for it.'I was hoping they would give us some start-up grant to enable us to fully utilise our acquired skills and become productive,' he said.Another trainee, Adegunle Adesoji, said that the training took him off the streets and made him a better person.'I was very idle before I got enrolled for this training. My parents saw it as a good opportunity for me to utilise while waiting for university admission.'I am glad I took part in the training. I feel more knowledgeable and fulfilled,' he said.
