Corruption, problem of millennium goals ICPC

Published by Tribune on Tue, 29 Mar 2011

FOR Nigeria to meet the demand of the 20-20-20 Millennium Goals in various communities and organisations, it must address the issue of corruption holistically with the collective commitment it deserves  not only by exposing corrupt practices, but by also ensuring that all things are respectfully carried out according to rules and regulations.Making the statement recently was the Head of the Oyo, Ogun zonal office of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr Olukile Olusesan at the enlightenment seminar organised for the staff of NISER in Ibadan.Mr Olusesan who said one of the disinfectant strategies of ICPC was the mobilisation of Nigerians in both urban and rural communities through education, explained that the awareness generated through public education has checkmated the hitherto excesses of a sizeable number of public servants in the conduct of government business at all levels thereby reducing incidence of corruption.Delivering a lecture on the theme of the seminar, Focusing on transparency, understanding the basics of the Anti graft campaigning in Nigeria Mr Kennedy Ewoteme who represented the Abuja office explained that the three prong actions of the commission which he described as, Preventive, Punitive and Enlightenment have helped in great measure in saving a lot of unspent money running into billions of naira for the country. He while admonishing members of the Anti-Corruption And Transparency Unit (ACTU) of NISER stressed the need for them to serve as the eye of both ICPC and the management of NISER by trying at all time to live above board. To encourage the staff, he said there was need to introduce a good reward system for those worthy of being a role model while urging the ACTU members to as much as possible live a honest life.He said, the society will be better of, if all Nigerians in their various places of work make accountability and transparency a watch word.Earlier, the chairperson of ACTU in NISER Mrs B.R. Agbede had said that the enlightenment programme was part of ACTUs mandate to inform member of staff of their roles, responsibilities and tasks to their country in the fight against corruption in the society. She said that the transformation the country deserves in all the communities that make up the nation can only be achieved through self transformation, self-discipline and upholding of integrity, truthfulness, accountability and rejection of lawlessness and corruption in any form.
