LAWMA plans cleaner Lagos at Yuletide

Published by Guardian on Fri, 23 Dec 2011

THE Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has laid out plans to collaborate with picnickers, party and carnival organisers to ensure a refuse-free festive season. The plan is to remove high volumes of waste that would be generated during the Christmas and New Year holidays .A statement by the Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya, said necessary measures had been put in place towards ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for residents and hordes of holidaying guests from all over Nigeria and the Diaspora expected in Lagos during the festive season. He disclosed that Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators have been directed to make available thousands of free-trash bags and render special services to the party and carnival organisers, who may file in requests on LAWMA's Toll-Free-Line 5577 or 07080601020.Oresanya noted that officers of LAWMA would be on a 24-hour monitoring duty to ensure that every PSP operator gets to the doorsteps of each tenement.Residents, he added, are also to receive prompt attention from PSP operators, as telephone numbers of senior LAWMA officials would be published widely for prompt response to complaints in the specific locations in which they have been assigned .Oresanya appealed to Lagos residents and visitors to complement government's efforts aimed at providing a healthy environment through safe refuse disposal, adding that 'proper containerisation, particularly from the point of generation, makes the evacuation of waste easier and faster'.The LAWMA boss charged Lagosians to patronise only accredited PSP operators and not cart-pushers who always dump refuse into drainages, canals and unauthorised places. He warned residents not to burn their refuse, as fumes released into the atmosphere are harmful and dangerous to health.Over 800 trucks and compactors are daily deployed by PSP and LAWMA operatives to keep the mega city - state of Lagos clean. Two transfer loading stations, 25 recycling centres and several landfill sites are also strategically located in the state to ensure safe disposal of waste. A hydro-clave medical equipment currently treats medical waste.
