Foreign partners owe Nigerian charcoal exporters N96m

Published by Punch on Sun, 25 Dec 2011

Twenty eight Nigerian exporters of charcoal to foreign countries in Europe have been duped to the tune of 447, 576 Euros (N96.3m).Ms. Azuka Ogo, the secretary of the Cargo Defence Fund, a Federal Government organisation that assists Nigerian importers and exporters in the pursuit of their claims, recoveries and legal remedies, told journalists in Lagos that the period of the loss was between 2009 and 2010.Ogo, who was reluctant to mention the names of the foreign companies, however said they were located in Germany, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands. She said, I am constrained from mentioning any names because there are legal actions being taken by CDF against these foreign companies. She said the matter had also been reported to the International Chamber of Commerce. From the list made available by CDF, 15 Nigerian exporters are being owed by different companies in Germany; six and five of them are being owed in Spain and Netherlands respectively; while two are Polish companies. She noted that the majority of the charcoal claims the CDF was handling was exported under the open account system, where buyers having received the goods and sold them for financial benefits in their countries later started giving excuses for failure to pay the Nigerian traders. She stated, You can see the pranks some of them are playing. This is very sad coming at a period when the Federal Government is encouraging Nigerians to explore foreign markets for our goods. It is pertinent to send out this fraud alert to other exporters to be on guard and not to fall victim.
