Re: Is Obasanjo inciting Nigerians against Jonathan

Published by Nigerian Compass on Sun, 25 Dec 2011

I don't know why people should still be talking about Obasanjo. Why don't you leave the man alone and allow him to enjoy his retirement' The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told us that he is the father and mother of modern Nigeria. If that is true, then he is an elder statesman. We should respect him because he is the best thing to have happened to us in this country. At least, he left fuel price the way he met it in 1999 while leaving office in 2007. You can see that all our roads are motorable, courtesy of Obasanjo. There is security, courtesy of Obasanjo. Our electricity is stable, courtesy of Obasanjo. There is job everywhere, courtesy of Obasanjo. Nigeria is a first-class country, courtesy of Obasanjo. So, why won't we continue to celebrate him' Isiaka Jimoh, LagosThe truth is that Obasanjo is one of those who brought us to where we are today. So, what exactly was he saying when he said that there is a disconnect between the people and the Federal Government' A disconnection he started when he was in office'David Oyewale, Ilorin.Chief Obasanjo believes he knows it all. That was why he didn't allow anybody to tell him what to do when he was in government. And that is principally why we are where we are today. At least, he was in charge of the petroleum sector for eight years, so, all the rot in that sector can be traced to his mismanagement.Moshood Anisulowo, IbadanIt is not enough to lambast Pieter Botha for saying the truth, especially about Nigerians. Let them abuse Botha and members of his family, that will not change the truth about what the man predicted. Have these people said anything about how Obasanjo brought us to this level'Lawal Ogunrinde, Ijebu-Ode.It is not true that it is Botha's curse that is affecting Nigeria. Let us search ourselves and see where we have gone wrong'Tayo Williams, Lagos. Is it only Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who brought us to where we are today' What of others before him' If we are going to attack Obasanjo, then Babangida, Abdulsalami, Buhari and others should be attacked for the rot in the system.Femi Ojo, Abeokuta.I said it in 1999 that Obasanjo's second coming would do this country no good. I was proved right in 2007 when he left. Cornelius Adewale, Lagos. You have said it all. Our problems in this country are self-inflicted. Ibrahim Major, AbakalikiIf we are blaming Obasanjo for everything that happened, what of the fuel subsidy which has been removed by the Federal Government' Do we blame Obasanjo for that' There is a vicious circle going on.Onimole Adegboyega, Akure. That piece of yours is prophetic and futuristic. Nigerians will never learn. A few days after you published that masterpiece, the Senate, in its true colour, came out with its abracadabra. It was during the Obasanjo administration that majority of our national assets were sold. Now, the Senate has said that Obasanjo was blameless and those who worked under him are to be blamed. What sort of injustice is greater than this' And it is this same Obasanjo who will be telling us that the Jonathan administration has alienated itself from the people.Paul Adigun, LagosLet me quote Obasanjo: 'There is the possibility of having the Arab Spring in Nigeria if similar conditions, hardships and un-employment which gave birth to it, are not addressed. It doesn't matter which way you look at it today. People are now talking of Arab Spring. And some people will say, is Egypt not developing' On economic scale, after South Africa, it is Egypt in Africa. Has Libya not got resources' At one time with a population of about five million, Libya was producing as much oil as Nigeria. But there was still discontentment because, yes, in terms of Gross Domestic Products (GDP), it was growing well but in terms of employment generation, there was a disconnect. That is one of the elements that led to the Arab Spring. There are others but let me take this one that is relevant to our discussion today. Agricultural business is important to creating jobs for our teeming youths'. What exactly does Obasanjo mean when he said that' Does he think we don't know his involvement in the economic crisis Nigeria is facing today'Titus Omole, Ile-IfeThe truth is that the way Obasanjo set up the late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and he is trying to set up President Goodluck Jonathan, Jonathan should watch out for the Ebora Owu.Olumide Adewale, Ibadan.I like your analysis on the N1 billion per person stuff. So, if I have N1 billion now, there is no way I will work again because I will be spending N50,000 everyday for 54 years. Waow! God, answer my prayer quick quick.Godwin Imalaha, Abakaliki.Which disconnection is Obasanjo talking about' Did he not start this disconnection between the government and the people through all his policies when he was our president from 1999 to 2007'Femi Olowonle, Mushin, Lagos. When the Arab Spring type of uprising comes to Nigeria, Obasanjo is one of the people who will be affected.Godwin Oblama, Makurdi. There is no way you can build something on nothing. Obasanjo did nothing to check the rot in the system when he was president. Today, Jonathan is at the receiving end and he doesn't have the liver to deal with Obasanjo.Abel Chukwudi, Onitsha.Right from 1960 when we got our independence from Britain, it has been a case of the more you look, the less you see in Nigeria. That is just the case with the country. That is why Obasanjo can come out and collectively abuse all of us because he knows that nothing will happen.Babatunde Ogidan, LagosFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo is a man I respect. And in his criticism of the present administration, I think he is right. Now, look at what Jonathan is trying to do, increasing fuel pump price from N65 to about N140. What he should have done is to fix the refineries. If that is done, the price of fuel will reduce, instead of going up. Do you blame Obasanjo for that' That is why he said Jonathan's administration is anti-people. I think I agree with him.Henry Ogbonna, Warri. How come the price of fuel in Saudi Arabia is about N8 and it is even less in Venezuela and we are taking our own price to about N140' Is that the fault of Obasanjo'Olufunke Obafoluke, Ibadan. Let Obasanjo abuse Jonathan till next year. It is not my business because it was Obasanjo who imposed him on us as Yar'Adua's deputy. So, they know where they are coming from. But, Obasanjo's abuse will have no effect on Jonathan if he does the following on this fuel subsidy debate: declare a state of emergency and mandate that all Nigerian refineries must become operational to their full capacities within the next two to three months so that we can produce our own domestically-consumed petroleum products at affordable prices while creating millions of jobs for numerous jobless Nigerian graduates.Ibrahim Musa, Kaduna. If Obasanjo could openly disown Yar'Adua in January, 2010, then, Jonathan should be careful of his godfather.Chuks Iloanyi, Benin. As you rightly said in your analysis, Obasanjo should answer Babangida on what was done to the $16 billion allocated to fix our electricity. I also want Babangida to answer the question being asked by Nigerians on how the $12 billion Gulf War oil windfall disappeared.Dada Olowokere, Lagos.By saying there is a disconnection between Jonathan and the people, does Obasanjo want Jonathan's administration to be toppled'Titilope Akanni, Ikeja, Lagos.Obasanjo moved against Shehu Shagari. Shagari was removed. He moved against Yar'Adua. Yar'Adua died. What does he want to do this time around' Is Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan safe'Simon Ikedi, AsabaObasanjo is just trying to get into the consciousness of the people by telling them what they want to hear. He is behaving like a human rights activist. Who does not know that millions of Nigerians are against fuel subsidy removal' So, if Obasanjo said there was a disconnect between the government and the people, he wants to force himself into the good books of Nigerians but we know that is not possible. Because of what he did while in office which is the foundation of the problem in the country today, Obasanjo can never enter our good books.Bidemi Anifowose, Ijebu-Ode
