Firm advocates ICT certification for unemployed graduates

The Managing Director, New Horizons, a leading Information Technology training firm in the country, Mr. Tim Akano, has recommended ICT certification as a necessary recipe that will take the over 51 million unemployed graduates in the country out of the woods.He said innovations were happening in the IT sector, worldwide adding that it was imperative for every job seeker to embrace ICT certification as a ticket to global relevance.Speaking during the inauguration of the Bowen University/New Horizons International ICT and e-business Certification resource centre in Iwo, Osun state, on Friday, Akano said certification of every graduates irrespective of their discipline was very important adding that this would add more value to their intellect by making them employable in the countrys competitive job market.He said, From the long list of graduates produced by all Nigerian tertiary institutions, only about 10 per cent get jobs, Nigeria currently has about 51 million unemployed graduates according to the statistics made available recently by the minister of labour and productivity.According to him, universities across the globe lack adequate resources to keep up with the level of technological innovations, adding that this explains why IT companies engage in strategic alliance to meet up with these challenges.Companies like Microsoft, Oracle, IDC, New Horizons formed strategic partnership to share ideas by bringing together what they have on their stable so as to meet up with IT innovations, he said.Commenting on the ICT and e-business certification infrastructure, Akano said it took six years for it to be completed, adding that it had capacity to produce certified ICT graduates of global standards.In his remarks, the Vice- Chancellor, Bowen University, Prof T. O Olagbemiro, stated that the 600-seater IT resource centre, which was built in partnership with New Horizons, would train and prepare students of the institution for international certification in Microsoft, CISCO, JAVA, and other international certifications and in turn enhance their market value.He further explained that ICT was a key enabler in any institution that desired to make a positive impact in academics, adding that without it, a library could not function at its peak.He said, Without doubt, ICT is a potentially useful tool both for managing education and for teaching. It is now a force that has changed the many aspects of the way we live.If one was to compare such fields as medicine, tourism, business, law, banking, engineering and architecture the impact of ICT cuts across the past two or three decades which has been very enormous.
