Group lays retreat centre's foundation

A non-governmental organisation under the Catholic Church, Knights of St. Mulumba, Lekki Subordinate Council, has laid the foundation of a retreat centre in Owode-Ogombo, in Lekki area of Lagos.The group stated that many infrastructure would be provided in the area.Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony on Saturday, the Grand Knight of the group, Mr. Obafemi Giwa-Amu, said the centre would provide pipe-borne water and electricity in the community and its inhabitants spiritual succour.Giwa-Amu said the group had started road construction in the community, adding that other facilities would follow soon.He said, For years, we have longed to have a place for our administrative functions, and a place where we can worship God in spirit and in truth.This project will be used as a centre for prayers, meetings, retreats and lodging during conferences. It will also be available to anybody wishing to use it for social engagements.Giwa-Amu stated that the chapel, which would include a 1,000-capacity conference centre, would serve as a centre where Christians could retreat.He said the group embarked on the project to spread the word of God to those in the community and visitors.This is part of our effort to foster and sustain the work of evangelism of the Catholic faith and ideals with a view to gaining more converts to the church. We have decided to start with Ogombo community and we hope that they will accept us in good faith, he said.According to him, the centre will provide boarding and other facilities that will be affordable for visitors.Stating other charity works of the group, Giwa-Amu said, As part of our sub-council charity activities, we engaged on a prison ministry that has so far facilitated the release of 500 awaiting trial inmates from the Ikoyi Prisons, he said.A member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the initiative would bring people closer to God and also bring development to the community.Citizens should always be ready to give back to the society like we have seen here today. What the Knights of St. Mulumba have done today is worthy of emulation, she said.
