Senate to probe Onitsha Bridge contractors

Published by Punch on Mon, 26 Dec 2011

The Senate Committee on Works has condemned the quality of work on the reconstruction of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway. The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ayogu Eze, said this on Friday at Onitsha, while inspecting work at the Nkpor Flyover, Onitsha Head Bridge and Upper Iweka area of the project. He said the Nkpor flyover was a caricature of what a flyover should be, saying the Senate would investigate the competence of the contractors and the level of funding of the project. The Senator said the contractors were not giving the road the seriousness it deserves considering its importance to Nigeria.Eze however commended the pace and quality of work on the three-kilometre Head BridgeUpper Iweka extension of the road, which is being expanded to 10 lanes to make provision for service lanes. He also praised Anambra State Governor Peter Obi for clearing the way for the expansion of the Upper IwekaHead bridge section of the road. He, however, said efforts should be made to move the trucks parked along the road to a controlled park to avert the future deterioration of the road.He lauded the Committee for the Decongestion of Traffic in Onitsha and the Anambra government task force led by the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Ayobami Omiyale, for ensuring free flow of traffic in Onitsha during the Christmas. The OnitshaEnugu Expressway reconstruction was awarded to CCC Nigeria Limited more than four years ago. But work on the artery was stalled after the asphalt was removed by the contractors.
