Boko Haram deceived security agents ' Ex NBA boss

Published by Punch on Mon, 26 Dec 2011

Following the bomb blast that occurred on Christmas Day at Madalla, Niger State, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Bayelsa State chapter, Mr. Stanley Damabide, on Sunday said security operatives were again deceived by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram. He observed that before the incident, the sect had issued repeated threats to unsettle Jos, Plateau State, with multiple bomb blasts.Damaide, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, however, said what happened on Christmas Day was a demonstration that the initial threat was a decoy that eventually diverted the attention of security operatives.Dont forget that they made so much noise about Jos but went to Niger State to do what they did. This suggests that we really need to address the issue of security seriously, he said.He blamed the development on the geographical size of the country and insufficient number of security operatives to cover it.This will require sufficient funds so that we can cover this large country, he said, adding that the rising insecurity was a justification to the over N900bn allocated to security in the 2012 proposed budget. We should consider the size of this country and, perhaps, have a rethink. This development justifies the huge sum that was budgeted by the government for security. This is such a large country that you need to have sufficient personnel to cover it security wise. To do that, they need to be equipped to enable them do their jobs effectively, he said. He, however, opined that the way the bomb attack was carried out at Madalla, was an indication that the days of Boko Haram were numbered. He said with additional resources in the areas of security, the Federal Government could effectively block all the security lapses and make it impossible for the sect to successfully carry out its bombings.Damabide observed that the menace of Boko Haram had gone complex and said the sect had shown signs of weakness and evidence that it was surmountable following its inability to penetrate the heart of the capital city.
