Aliyu, Tambuwal, Falana condemn bomb blasts, call for action

Published by Punch on Mon, 26 Dec 2011

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, has condemned the Christmas Day bomb blasts in Madalla, Niger State and Jos, Plateau State. In a statement in Lagos on Sunday, Falana described the bombings as barbaric, while commiserating with the families of the victims. He said, As has been the case in the past two years, the government will issue a statement threatening to deal with the culprits while the nation waits for another disaster to happen. The Federal Government should be told that Nigerians are tired of official statements that are full of sound and fury signifying nothing.Falana called on the Federal Government to rejig the nations security agencies to assure Nigerians of their safety. He said, In view of the dangerous implications of allowing the mass killing of unarmed people in churches, markets and other public places the Federal Government should move urgently and decisively to shake up the security apparatus to assure Nigerians and the international community of its capacity to guarantee the security of lives and property in the country. In view of the worsening security situation in the country I appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan to purge the security and intelligence apparatus of incompetent personnel who ought to have resigned their appointments over a year ago.Personal friendship and relationship should not be allowed to compromise the security of the nation. Also, the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to quickly convene a stakeholders forum to proffer far reaching solutions to the incessant bombings in the country. The governor, who condemned the spate of explosions in the nation, said Nigerians must be worried now, especially with the Christmas Day bombing of a Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State. The governor, who reacted through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Danladi Ndayebo, said the spate of bombings in sections of the country had become a national emergency and must be treated as such.Aliyu said he was deeply pained by the fact that the perpetrators chose a holy day (Christmas) to carry out such a dastardly act.He insisted that a stakeholders summit that would address the security challenges facing the nation was inevitable. The statement read in part, The issue of security should not be left to government alone. My thinking is that government alone cannot stop the activities of terrorists which have left hundreds of innocent Nigerians either dead or wounded.Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, in a message of condolence through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Imam Imam, on Sunday said the cases of insecurity witnessed in various parts of the country would soon be a thing of the past.He said, The House of Representatives will work closely with other arms of government to ensure that the country is more secure in future.
