Victim risks blindness

Published by Punch on Mon, 26 Dec 2011

One of the victims of the bomb blast, Mr. Sunday Onoja, risks losing his sight as a result of the injuries he sustained in the tragic incident.Onoja was the only victim of the blast at the Maitama District Hospital when our correspondent visited around 4pm.Onoja lay unconscious in a bed in the accident and emergency ward. The burns on his face appeared to be severe, as the skin was badly burnt. What was left of the facial skin was a darkened tissue clinging to the facial bones.A doctor at the hospital told our correspondent that Onoja sustained the injuries as a result of the facial burns. He said the victim would be transferred to the Asokoro District Hospital, to ensure adequate treatment of the eye injuries. The development, according to the doctor, is because the Maitama District Hospital lacks an eye section, which is available at the Asokoro District Hospital.Onojas wife, Maria, and his son in-law were looking after him in the hospital when our correspondent visited.Maria, who could barely contain her grief, stared at her husband, who lay immobile in his bed.She told our correspondent that she could not wait for her husband to regain consciousness. She said, This morning, my husband told me he was going to church. After a while, I heard the bomb blast; I was scared and I ran out of the house, just like other people. When I realised that the sound came from the church, I rushed there. But I didnt find my husband. I was scared and confused.Later, I went to look for him at Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, but still he was not there. It was later that I heard that he was in Maitama District Hospital.I am very sad, I am waiting for him to wake up. He has been like this since I came here.
