Man hangs self beside lagoon

A yet-to-be identified man on Sunday hanged himself on a tree close to the lagoon on Marinas opposite the Power Holding Company of Nigeria office on the Lagos Island.Although the incident was believed to have taken place on Christmas Day, when our correspondent visited the scene on Monday around 10am, the mans body was dangling from the tree, while a crowd stood around watching.A pair of red slippers, complete yellow lace traditional attire and a sack was found at the foot of the tree suggesting that the deceased who should be in his late 50s, might have changed into the green ankara wax attire so that he could not be easily noticed on the tree top.It was also suspected that the deceased might have brought the clothes to the scene in the sack.A passerby, Richard Amso, told PUNCH METRO that an unidentified couple first spotted the deceased on the tree and raised the alarm, which attracted residents of the area and passersby.Amso said, I was at the Leventis BRT Bus Stop on Sunday around 3:30pm when I saw the couple who sat down under the tree relaxing, run towards me and shouting at the same time.When I inquired from them what went wrong, they told me that they saw a liquid substance dropping off from the tree and suspected it was urine. They said when they looked up, to see where it was coming from, they saw the deceased dangling from the tree.I came to the scene myself and I saw him and since then this place has been jam-packed with crowd. The deceased might have committed suicide in the early hours of Sunday.When our correspondent inquired from people gathered at the scene, nobody could volunteer any information about the man suggesting that he might not be residing in the area.When his corpse was finally brought down by volunteers led by a 22-year-old butcher, Olore Nurudeen, insects had already taken over his body. A putrid smell also oozed from his remains.An ambulance from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit picked up the corpse at about 11am to the General Hospital, Isolo.When contacted on the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said no foul play was suspected and added that the corpse had been deposited at the General Hospitals mortuary, Isolo.Our men were at the scene of the incident at about 9am. Nothing was found on the deceased and his identity is unknown. For now we are not suspecting any foul play but investigation is ongoing, Jinadu said.
