WBC won't strip Mayweather of title

The World Boxing Council will not be taking away undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweathers welterweight championship belt.According to Boxing Scene, WBC regulations rule that when a champion is jailed, the boxer is stripped of his title. Mayweather is set to serve 90 days in jail for a domestic abuse charge.But WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman said the boxing sanctioning body is standing behind Mayweather, who has been ordered to report to the Clark County jail on January 6.Sulaiman and the WBC board will not remove Mayweathers title yet, but they will review his case and announce a final decision in the coming weeks.The World Boxing Council has always been in the corner of the boxer, Sulaiman told Boxing Scene. The organisation was created to protect the fighter.We will try to achieve the most fair outcome for the fighter and the fans, he added.Mayweather won the WBC welterweight championship last September 17 with a controversial 4th round knockout of former champion Victor Ortiz.
