Osaile calls on Sambo to save sports

Published by Punch on Tue, 27 Dec 2011

Former boxing promoter, Martin Osaile, has called on Vice-President Namadi Sambo to intervene in the crises bedevilling Nigerian sports and help reverse the misfortunes in the sector.Sambo, a former governor of Kaduna State, supervised the organisation of the National Sports Festival hosted by the state in 2010, which makes Osaile believe the Vice-President is in a good position to correct some anomalies in Nigerian sports.Osaile said, Nigerian sports used to be part of the responsibilities of the Vice President but Im not sure about the arrangement anymore. Whatever it is, I think Sambo should be in a very good position to intervene in our sports based on his success during the KADA 2009.That sports festival was one of the best organised with the best equipment at the time. Sambo made sure the athletes had the best experience at the event, so why cant he have some input to develop our sports.Osaile insisted that the problems of Nigerian football were beyond the coaches or the players, saying there are problems inherent in the sports administrative structure. He said, Samson Siasia and Austin Eguavoen are not the problems we have. There are administrative problems which have affected the morale of the players. This problem is not just in football, it exists in all other sports. We need to come together and deliberate on how to develop our sports in 2012. We cant afford to go to the Olympics with the instability in our sports.
