Tackle insecurity before removal of fuel subsidy - CAN

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Dec 2011

The chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North-Central, Reverend Yakubu Pam, has accused the Federal Government of putting the cart before the horse in running the affairs of the country saying the best President Goodluck Jonathan can do for the country is to tackle insecurity before dabbling in the removal of fuel subsidy.Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Jos, the CAN chairman saidaddressing the Boko Haram menace, armed robbery and other social vices causing insecurity in the country should be of paramount importance to the government, adding that efforts of government to curb these atrocities were not enough. He sad: 'What we see happening in other countries are now starring us in the face. There is insecurity everywhere, yet our government is not giving this the deserved attention. What is of paramount important to them now is how to get more money through removal of subsidy. If they get the money, can they invest it well under a chaotic situation''My candid advice to those in position of authority is to face the insecurity situation in the country squarely and stop politiking. Peace is paramount, without it, no nation can progress, no matter the economic policies on ground. Our government needs to brace up,' he said.On the bomb explosions in Suleja, Jos, Maiduguri and Damaturu on Christmas Day, the cleric said the reason adduced by those behind the dastardly acts were not cogent enough to warrant attack on churches adding that fighting the government and attacking places of worship could never be accepted as justification for their action.According to him, from all indications, the fight is against the Christians not the government adding that the intention of those behind the attack is to scare the Christians from going to church and also to make the festive period a gloomy one.He therefore charged all religious leaders and traditional rulers in the country to rise up to the occasion and condemned the despicable act adding that the violence in the country is gradually becoming unbearable and capable of consuming the nation.
