Minister: FG reviewing security plans

Published by Daily Trust on Tue, 27 Dec 2011

The Federal Government is re-strategising and re-jiggling its security plans in order to tackle the spate of bombings in the country, Interior Minister Abba Moro said in Abuja yesterday, a day after the Christmas Day bombings that left dozens of people dead.Moro spoke when he visited scene of the blast in Madalla, Niger State, and at the National Hospital Abuja where victims of the bombing were being treated.'Government will change tactics' in its fight against the Boko Haram sect, he said at the Saint Theresa's Church, Madalla, where most of the deaths were recorded. At the National Hospital, Moro said, 'There is room for improvement (in security plans), it means that government has to do more; government has to change tactics, this definitely will be with a determined effort to curb the excesses of these sectarian groups.'As it is with all terrorists all over the world, they change their tactics, they change their modus operandi, with every successful or unsuccessful attempt at bomb blast; they change their tactics. I can tell you that government also steps up efforts at matching or surpassing tactics of terrorists.'The reason for despair is that these things kept occurring occasionally that definitely is a worrisome situation and everybody have reasons to feel concern but this government is determined to ensure that this stranger called bomb blast does not take root in Nigeria.'If you watched at the site of the blast, policemen and civil defence officers were injured, they were there to secure the lives of Nigerians that were there to worship. If you also notice in Damaturu, the attack there consumed an armoured tank stationed there to prevent such occurrence, so for one reason or the other the suicide bomber was prevented from entering the church, had they succeeded the causality would have been more. All options are opened.'Among those on the minister's delegation were commandant general of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ade Abolurin, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Muhammad Sidi-Sani and the Comptroller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olusegun Okebiorun.
