Group hails Buhari over comments on bomb blasts

Published by Punch on Wed, 28 Dec 2011

A group, Concerned Advocate for Good Governance, has expressed satisfaction with the reaction of the former Head of State and presidential candidate for the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 election, Maj.-Gen Mohammadu Buhari (retd.) on the recent bomb blasts in the country. Buhari had condemned the action of the Boko Haram sect which had claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks in the northern part of the country. Describing the bombings as heinous acts of terror, the CPC leader called on the people of goodwill to condemn the series of attacks in the northern part of the country. But speaking with THE PUNCH on Monday in Port Harcourt, the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Olusegun Bamgbose, said Buharis comment on the blasts portrayed him as a patriotic Nigerian. Bamgbose explained that his (Buhari) remark on the ugly incident that killed many people in Niger, Yobe and Plateau States showed that the politician had risen above tribal and religious sentiments. "We are commending him (Buhari) for his condemnation of the blasts that rocked some parts of the North. Buharis condemnation of the barbaric act of the Boko Haram sect in totality shows that he has risen above tribal and religious sentiments. "One would have expected him to keep mute like some northern leaders on such a burning issue that affects the country, but he came out to express his disapproval of the bombings," he stated. Bamgbose, who is a constitutional lawyer, expressed the belief that President Goodluck Jonathan and Buhari would be able to work together in future in the interest of the countrys development. The leader of the group described those behind the dastardly act as agents of destabilization and destruction, even as he added that no amount of terror would destroy the countrys democracy. He said, "We want to assure Nigerians that the fire and the fury of the Boko Haram sect cannot consume this nation, but will refine it. If Nigeria could survive the civil war, certainly, we will survive this demonic onslaught. "Nigeria will come out of it strong and better. There is no way the recklessness of such a group would overwhelm the nation. Nigeria will definitely overcome her present challenge."
