Group alleges plan to disrupt Ondo Senator's rally

Published by Punch on Wed, 28 Dec 2011

The Akoko Youth Integrity Group on Tuesday alleged that the Labour Party government in Ondo State was planning to disrupt a rally where Senator Ajayi Boroffice was billed to defect to the Action Congress of Nigeria at Oka-Akoko on Wednesday (today).Boroffice was elected on the platform of the LP in the April 2011 general election but decided to dump the party to enable him to participate in the 2012 governorship poll on the ticket of the ACN.A statement by the Coordinator of AYIG, Mr. Eniola Omoyemi, in Akure on Tuesday, alleged that the LP was planning to cause crisis in order to create an impression that Boroffice was unpopular in his home town. The statement read, "We gathered that the party (LP) will bring well-armed thugs in two lorries to Oka-Akoko, venue of the event and to also induce the police in the area to be complacent in the face of the attack."The intention of the planned crisis is to create the impression that Boroffice is not popular at home."This planned action is also going to be followed by the dispatching of so-called registers to all constituencies within the senatorial district to sign up for the withdrawal of Boroffice from the Senate."The truth is that the LP has broken up and two factions of the party now exist in Ondo State."For any elected official having self-respect, this is the time to leave a party which is already in tatters, which is what Boroffice has done."However, the Public Relations Officer of the LP in the state, Mr. Femi Okunjemiruwa, described the allegation of "the faceless" group as "a fabricated lie aimed at pre-empting an imaginary situation."Okunjemiruwa noted that Boroffice had the right to join any party of his choice and that his absence from the LP would not affect the partys chances in the governorship election. He said, "Why should the LP hire thugs to disrupt his (Boroffice) rally' The likes of Messrs Saka Lawal, Olaiya Oni, Solagbade Amodeni, Omoniyi Omodara had all defected to the ACN and nobody disturbs them."
