CIBN expels Cecilia Ibru, former Oceanic Bank CEO

THE Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), the umbrella body of all bankers in the country, has struck out the name of Mrs Cecilia Ibru, former Managing Director/Chief Executive, Oceanic Bank International Plc and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute from its register of members.According to a statement signed by Head of Corporate Affairs, CIBN, Mr Ben Igbokwe and made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Lagos on Tuesday, the move was towards the furtherance, maintenance and observance of ethical standards and professionalism among practitioners of the banking profession in Nigeria.He explained that the action was taken in line with the decision of the institute's disciplinary tribunal on December 12 and had also been confirmed by the Governing Council of the institute.According to him, the disciplinary tribunal, made up of eminent members of the banking profession with a retired Justice of the Supreme Court as an assessor, in a unanimous decision, granted the CIBN's request that: 'the name of Dr (Mrs) Cecilia Ibru be struck out of the list of members of the CIBN (as provided by S 14(2) of CIBN Act); that Dr (Mrs) Cecilia Ibru should cease from being a member of the banking profession (as provided by S. 22(1) of CIBN Act); that Dr (Mrs) Cecilia Ibru should cease to hold herself out as a member of the banking profession (as provided by S. 16 of CIBN Act).'With this development, he stated, Dr Ibru was no longer a member of the institute and hence, banking profession, adding that she had also ceased to be a member of the banking profession and should not hold herself out as a member of the profession.
