Cult clashes claim 3 lives in Makurdi '1 killed as farmers, herdsmen clash in Adamawa

NO fewer thanthree personshave been confirmed dead as rival cult groups clashed in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, at the weekend.The cult groups were said to have engaged themselves in a fierce battle in Wadata area of Makurdi metropolis leaving one person dead.Information gathered also revealed that the same groups renewed the fight on Monday night at the same location where two persons were killed.The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ejike Alaribe, who confirmed the incident during a telephone chat with the Nigerian Tribune, disclosed that 52 persons had already been arrested.While disclosing that there were cult clashes in Kanshio, Wurukum and Modern Market, all in the capital city, he assured that the police had intensified surveillance in the affected areas.'The new Commissioner of Police has ordered that surveillance should be intensified in these areas that are dens of cult groups. Our men are on top of the situation. We will raid these areas and apprehend all of them,' the PPRO declared.Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the activities of cultists in the city had been giving the police sleepless nights.Meanwhile, one person died in a clash between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa on Tuesday, a witness said.A farmer, Mallam Yahuza Iliya, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiha that the fight broke out when the herdsmen allegedly entered their farms and destroyed crops.Iliya said that during the fight, one herdsman was killed.The Acting Administrator of the council, Alhaji Lawan Datti, confirmed the incident, adding that policemen had been deployed to the area to maintain law and order.Datti said the council had also set up a committee to discuss with herdsmen and farmers as a way of checking the situation from escalating.
