Madalla bombing: Evil days lie ahead if' 'Mimiko

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Dec 2011

ONDO State governor, Dr OlusegunMimiko, has condemned in strong terms the bombing on Christmas day of churches in the northern part of the country, which left many dead and scores injured. He said evil days lie ahead for the nation if perpetrators of the dastard act refused to have a change of heart. The governor described the bombing as a dastardly act of inhumanity, even as he challenged all sane men across religious and ethnic divides to rise in one voice to condemn the perpetrators. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, Mimiko said the bombers were feeding on the absence of a national consensus on the criminality and inhumanity of taking innocent lives with impunity.Beyond immediate condemnation by the elite, which the governor perceived to be often times pretentious, he submitted that the elite go about fuelling the embers of discord and sharpening the edges of the differences in the nation.Mimiko said: 'There is no reason sound enough, no justification logical enough and no injustice grave enough to warrant recourse to such grave tactics as bombing and mass murder.'Nigerians should rise above politics and quest for political relevance and see how to fashion a credible preventive as well as response mechanism to those who have deliberately chosen violence as a means of pursuing their cause, whatever it is."He warned that evil days lie ahead if there was no change of course by those bent on the violent way of seeking redress to perceived injustice."No nation wrecks the kind of carnage as we are now witnessing without paying higher price of internal implosion. We must do everything to avert this drift to chaos," he said. The governor condoled families affected by the blast, asking the forces behind the ungodly acts to think again and see if their cause could be better served through less destructive means.
