LCDA plans jetty for Badagry, Mile 2, CMS waterways

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Dec 2011

The Chairman,Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), of Lagos State, Mr Amida Abudu, has said the council will soon commence construction of jetties at Olorunda, Badagry and CMS waterways.Abudu said this during a courtesy visit of the Society for Development and Sustainability in Africa (SODSA), led by its founder, Lady Comfort Ani, to his office.'What we intend to do is decongest the traffic gridlock that people on Badagry-Mile 2-CMS Expressway face daily.``People on that road lose between three and five hours daily to the gridlock.'Because of this, we are seeking to provide flying boats from Olorunda Secretariat to CMS.'This will shorten the time spent from Olorunda to CMS to less than an hour for those who go by water.``The jetties will also bring additional revenue for the LCDA,`` he said. The chairman said that the construction of the jetties would also mean that car parks would need to be created. He said that car owners using the parks would pay a token, which meant more revenue for the council and the others within the areas the jetties are located. He said that Nigeria's development process had been bedeviled by lack of good road networks. He said that leaders that intended to address the transport challenges confronting the nation, required more fund and greater levels of collaboration with the private sector. In her speech, Ani said that the `jetty project` was a laudable initiative. She added that visionary leadership at the local council level was what the nation required to transform the grassroots region. She appealed to the state government to repair the road leading to the council secretariat as it was the major link road for tourists visiting the Whispering Palms Beach at Iworo-Ajido.According to Ani, the tourism potentials of the beach may not be fully harnessed if the link road remained impassable. She said that the SODSA's visit was partly to know how it could collaborate with the council in the area of social development.
