Jigawa records 2 new polio cases

TWO new polio cases have been reported in Gwiwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, few days after this year's last round of immunization exercise was concluded in the state.This was disclosed by the state's UNICEF Representative, Mrs Jane Nyanzi, while speaking with newsmen in preparation for polio-free torch campaign.Mrs. Jane Nyazi explained the Gwiwa new cases had brought the total cases recorded so far in the state to 11 this year alone.She said that Ringim, Babura, Guri, Roni, Birnikudu, Dutse and Gwiwa were the affected local government areas.The UNICEF representative expressed the need of more enlightenment and mobilization of people to accept vaccine, adding that 'non compliance to OPV and high numbers of missed children were the reasons for incessant outbreak.'According to her, the poor commitments by the team of vaccinators remained a big challenge.She, however, called on relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to fight the scourge and eradicate it by 2012.Nyazi who is a Ugandan national, maintained that Ringim has the most serious threat of the decease in the state.and therefore, called on the Media men to contribute their quarter and traditional rulers to double their commitments on the programme.
