Arrested drug suspect dies in Kano police custody

Twenty two-year-old suspected drug user Naziru Shehu has died in a mysterious circumstances at the hands of police at Bachirawa in Fagge local government area of Kano. The young man was arrested alongside few others at a football field after the police raided the area called Yammata in Bachirawa area. He had been in Police custody for three days before his corpse was deposited at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital last Saturday.According to the deceased's father Mallam Shehu Usman of Fagge quarters, his son had returned from the market where he was known to be selling women's items and after taking food he went to watch football and there was a raid by the police of suspected drug users, a development that led to Naziru's arrest.The bereaved father said when all efforts to trace him were unsuccessful he asked his eldest son to check with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) the following day after the matter was reported to the police.He said no response was received until on Saturday when a boy from the neighbourhood advised them to check with hospitals as he heard that one of those who escaped the arrest, was hit and sustained injuries.The father also said on reaching the mortuary they instantly identified Naziru with a different name Nura and carried the corpse back home for burial, saying those who washed Naziru's body said the young man had broken ribs, broken spine and a fracture on his hand.'I have known my child and everybody here can testify that he was not violent and he sometimes supported me despite his age and has not fought with anyone. I have left everything to God for He was the one that gave me Naziru and took him', he said.He also said also he has no means to pursue any legal action as he is struggling to cater for the remaining children, adding that he lost another son Bashir to a hit-and-run driver and does not want to pursue what he cannot afford to continue.
