Court remands man for possessing explosives

A 30-year-old man, Gambo Abdullahi, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly possessing explosives.Abdullahi was arraigned before an Osogbo Senior Magistrates Court on Wednesday for alleged conspiracy and possession of explosives, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.The prosecutor, Arawole Jimoh, had told the court that the accused and Ismaila Garo, now at large, on December 15, at about 10am in Ile-Ife conspired to unlawfully possess explosives.Jimoh alleged that the accused and Garo intended to commit felony with the substances.The prosecutor said the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 516 and 514 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2003.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two counts.Senior Magistrate Olusola Aluko ordered that the accused person be remanded in Ilesa Prisons immediately.Aluko directed the counsel to the accused person, Mr Taiwo Awokunle, to file a formal bail application, and adjourned the case till January 24, 2012.Meanwhile, a 25-year-old trader, Abdullahi Balla, was on Wednesday at an Ejigbo Magistrates Court, Lagos, sentenced to three months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone valued at N20,000 and N5,000 cash.Magistrate Maimunat Folami did not give Balla an option of fine when he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing, NAN reports.Balla had admitted during his arraignment on December 23, that he committed the offence, attributing it to the handiwork of the Devil.He, however, pleaded for leniency.Prosecutor Olakunle Shonibare told the court that Balla stole the cell phone and cash from Mrs. Oreoluwa Oke.He said that the crime was committed on December 21, at about 3pm at 13, Fatoki Street, Igando.Shonibare said, Balla entered the shop of the complainant under the pretext of buying a bottle of drink.The accused pretended to sit and drink while he stole the complainant`s phone valued at N20,000 and N5,000 cash and ran.The prosecutor said the victim raised the alarm which attracted the attention of passersby who arrested Balla and took him to a police station.Shonibare said that the offence was punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
