Eagles: Enegwa fears for home-based players

Published by Punch on Thu, 29 Dec 2011

Ex-international Taiwo Enegwa has advised the home-based players in the Super Eagles to seize the opportunity given to them by coach Stephen Keshi in staking claims in the team. The team have played three friendly matches against domestic sides in Abuja this month but despite winning the games, Keshi has stated he is not convinced of their quality.Enegwa believes the poor quality of the domestic league may have affected the performance of the players at the top level.Theres no excuse for them not to impress the coach especially when theres no foreign-based player to compete with before getting a place in the team, Enegwa, who coaches Union Bank FC, said. They may have won their games but the performance is important to the coach. Keshi will not likely select all of them for the international games coming up next year but hell want to see the best of them that can justify his inclusion in the final selection.Ill appreciate their inclusion in the team during the final selection because it will encourage other players in the domestic league. Their exclusion could further create a gap between the home and the foreign-based.Enegwa, however, advised Keshi to invest more time and patience with the players, saying their hunger for success at the top level could be an advantage for Nigeria at crucial times. He said, The coach can invite whoever he believes can deliver results but I see the domestic league players as being eager to succeed. What is needed is for someone to channel their energy correctly. There are calls for Nigeria to bring back Yakubu Aiyegbeni and other players. I wont criticise that suggestion as long as the coach believes they can add value to the team. If not, we should forget about them.
